Big Brother - installation

Big Brother can be installed on several Windows operating systems and many UNIX/Linux operating system platforms. The Professional Edition is supported by Quest Software on Windows XP, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2003 Server, Windows 2008 Server, Solaris 8, 9 and 10 (Sparc and Intel), HP-UX 11 and 11i, RedHat ES 3, 4 and 5, Suse 9 and 10, AIX 5.2, 5.3 and 6.1 (client only) and MAC OS X (x86 darwin 9.7, client only). However, the Professional Edition will run as designed on many other nixes including, but not limited to: CentOS, BSD, Fedora Core, Caldera, IRIX, Mandrake and more...

BBPE has a simplified installation routine and comes with precompiled binaries, there's no need to compile the software.

A UNIX/Linux install goes like:

1. Save the BBServer and/or BBClient tarball on the target server (tarballs are usually FTP'd to the target machine).
2. Untar the tarball in the bb user home directory (usually /home/bb, or, /export/home/bb).
3. As the root user, execute the bbconfig install script (/home/bb/bb4.20-bbpe/install/bbconfig) and answer the configuration questions.

That's pretty simple; there are a few things you'll need to know before executing the bbconfig script, things like, where the Apache DocumentRoot and cgi-bin are located and who the Apache software owner is. Apache must also be configure to FollowSymLinks from the DocumentRoot. See the BBPE UNIX/Linux installation link for detailed step by step instructions.

A Windows install goes like:

1. Save the BBServer and/or BBClient installer on the target machine.
2. Double click the installer to start the Wizard.
3. Click Next, Next, Next... then Finish.

That was pretty simple too. Actually, you'll need to accept the license and specify who can use the software, where the software will be installed, etc... See the BBPE Windows installation link for detailed step by step instructions.

A Better Than Free install goes likes:

1. This one's a bit more complicated, see the BTF installation link for detailed step by step instructions.

BTF source code is available for non-profit and educational use. Please be sure to read the Better Than Free license. The source code must be compiled on the target with server, which means you'll need a compiler, you can't go wrong with gcc!
